Although the mailing lists on here are for the use of Region Three Members, they are not restricted to just these members. Anyone, whether or not they are a member of STARFLEET, or even in Region Three are welcome to join. However, we do follow the following Region Three Mailing List Commandments.
I. Thou shalt not send any attached files to the list.
That means that *nobody* is allowed to send binary files (.exe, .wav or whatever) to this list. This of all is the rule not to break.
II. Thou shalt keep it plain and simple.
That means that *nobody* is allowed to use styled text or HTML encoding of any kind in their messages. Remember not everyone has the ability to receive emails that are more than plain text and if HTML or stylized text is used it comes out as garbage.
III. Thou shalt not get to full of yourself.
This means that you will limit signature blocks to six lines, including all information, decorations, quotations, and blank lines.
IV. Thou shalt not flame thy fellow list member.
Respect your fellow list member. NO insults, flames or other acts that disrupt the even flow of discussion on the list will be allowed. We expect you to act like adults when posting here. Feel free to express disagreement with someone's position by arguing your position. Do not feel free to express your disagreement via attacks on the other party as an individual. If you must take the discussion to a “higher” level then do it privately. This rule will be STRICTLY ENFORCED! This includes not only fellow list members, but ANYONE. NO ONE shall use any of the Region Three lists to transmit any threatening, harassing or libelous material against another list member.
If ANYONE does any of the above, Region Three retains the right to terminate any and all access to any and /or all Region Three Lists.
V. Thou shalt follow the subject matter of the Mailing List.
That means that if you are in the Shuttle Operations Mailing List, please do not discuss the latest DS9 episode. (Unless, of course, you can find some way of making it relevant to the List topic... )
VI. Thou shalt only quote the relevant part of the message to which thou art replying to.
That means that you can’t quote the entire message to which you are replying to if it’s not necessary (those are called “me too” posts). Don’t quote .sigs either. However, make it clear to which part you are replying to.
VII. Thou shalt not post more than five (5) messages a day on the list.
This is your daily limit, but we’ll be flexible in certain cases. However, please remember that these do fill up the other members mailboxes and act responsibly.
VIII. Thou shalt change the subject of the message to which thou art replying to if it has become irrelevant (the title, of course).
Change the message in the headers if it doesn’t make any sense, or some people who might want to read your post but not a reply to the original message to which you are replying to will just delete your post.
IX. Thy address shalt not start bouncing mail.
If it does, we'll unsubscribe you from the list. We currently don’t have a digest option. It is your duty to see that this doesn’t happen to you, as we don’t send warnings to the people concerned (we just don’t have the time).
X. Thou shalt send all administrative and technical questions or comments to the Chief of Computer Operations.
That means no “how do I get off the list” on the latter. Email CompOps and I'll tell you.
XI. Thou shalt not forward private email.
No forwarding of private mail. Messages sent to you privately are not to be shared with the list without the permission of the author. The same applies for messages from limited-access mailing lists.
XII. Thou shalt not be a “mule”.
This means that no one will forward messages to the list for non-subscribers. Some folks aren't subscribed because they aren't allowed to post to the Regional Lists. If someone asks you to share their thoughts with the list, ask them to contact CompOps. We'll post their message for them if we think it's appropriate.
XIII. Thou shalt not commit SPAM.
This means that NO ONE will use any of the Region Three Lists for spamming, junk mail, bulk sending or posting of unsolicited messages, or any use of distribution lists that include people who have not given specific permission to be included in such distribution process.
- DO NOT FORWARD CHAIN LETTERS. A chain letter is a message that urges you to pass it along to others. Simple as that. It doesn't have to be a get-rich-quick scheme to be a prohibited chain letter. Chain e-mail is against the terms of service of most Internet service providers, and is absolutely against the rules here. This includes but is not limited to chain petitions, virus warnings, snowballs, and other messages that urge you to pass them to all your friends are forbidden.
- NO VIRUS WARNINGS. If you receive an e-mail message warning you of a dastardly virus or prank that everyone should know about, do yourself (and us) a favor and DON'T forward it to everyone you know. Above all, don't forward it to any Regional Lists. Odds are very good it's a hoax, an urban legend, or otherwise bogus. If you get something that seems real, and you feel everyone needs to know about it, please pass it on to CompOps and I'll post it if it seems appropriate.
- NO TEST MESSAGES. If the operation of the list needs to be tested for some reason, one of the list administrators will do so. If you feel there's a problem we don't know about, please let us know. If you need to test the operation of your e-mail, please do so by exchanging e-mail with an individual, or even send an innocuous command to majordomo.
- NO ADVERTISING OR SALES PITCHES, whether to promote something that would benefit you, a friend, or an unrelated company. We may make exceptions for chapter fundraisers and the like, but only after permission is obtained before posting such messages.
- NO "ME TOO" POSTS. If you'd also like the information someone has requested on the list, send a private note to that person asking him or her to share the results of his or her request. If you agree with what someone has just said, feel free to express your agreement in a private note. Don't bother posting a reply to the list unless you have something to add to the discussion.
Furthermore any obscene material or any material that may be deemed offensive shall not be sent via a Regional mailing list.
If ANYONE does any of the above, Region Three retains the right to terminate any and all access to any and /or all Region Three Lists.
